How emotional honesty can improve your relationships

Honesty is the best policy, right? You’ve probably read that being truthful, vulnerable, and communicative in a relationship is key. But, what about emotional honesty

We all have thoughts and feelings that we may prefer to stay hidden. Although, in order to deeply connect with your partner on another level you have to be emotionally honest about your feelings too.

Hiding or controlling your emotions can lead to feelings of resentment or anger. It’s better to wear your heart on your sleeve and lay all of your cards on the table. If your partner truly loves you they will honor and accept your truth without judgment.

What is Emotional Honesty?

To put it simply, emotional honesty is about sharing your thoughts and feelings honestly with another person. No hiding or suppressing your feelings but being fully aware and accepting of them. Thus, allowing deeper and more significant conversations with your partner.

If you’re searching for a fulfilling relationship, you need to learn how to be honest about your feelings. When you choose to hide parts of yourself it can cause distance and tension between you and your partner. This can lead to an unsatisfying relationship that doesn’t allow room for growth.

Understanding Emotional Dishonesty

There are countless reasons why we don’t want to share our feelings with another. We may fear that we will be rejected and hurt or that we’ll upset our loved ones. However, by hiding emotions, you are only creating tension and conflict with yourself and others. When you deny your feelings, you may temporarily avoid an uncomfortable conversation but the authenticity of the relationship will begin to dwindle. It’s a form of self-manipulation that could eventually lead to a breakup.

Emotional honesty is a practice, just like any other skill, that can be developed and grown over time. Couples who develop healthy and intimate communications will have conflict, which is not a bad thing. It’s how they react to these differences that make or break the relationship. Both of them must be willing to listen and find a solution respectfully. With time, you too will notice this newfound level of comfortability will develop into a deeply fulfilling relationship.

The Importance of Emotional Honesty In Relationships

Avoiding your emotions won’t do you any good in the long run. Here are 5 key reasons to practice emotional honesty now.

1) Honesty is the best form of intimacy

When you’re open with your partner you form a deeper understanding of each other. This creates a deeper and more nourishing love connection that’s fully accepting and void of judgment. It brings the phrase “bare your soul” to a whole new meaning.

2) It reduces resentment

Keeping any part of yourself hidden away will eventually cause anger and resentment. It also isolates you from your loved one. Don’t let your thoughts and emotions get bottled up. It will only fester and lead to an angry outburst that won’t benefit you.

3) Decreases tension

When you can be honest about your feelings it can help clear the air and release any tension that may have been culminating.

4) Improves Communication

Discussing your emotions can help cultivate more meaningful conversations with your partner. Your relationship will be rich with patience, love, and honesty on a much deeper level.

5) Builds Trust

The more honest and open you are with your partner the stronger your bond will be. It builds trust and brings you to a new depth in your relationship

How to be Emotionally Honest

It’s only natural that we want to be accepted and loved. When you reveal yourself fully to another it opens the door for them to be accepting of you.

Now, being emotionally honest doesn’t mean saying what you think all of the time. It means being aware of your thoughts and feelings and making a conscious choice to share them with another person. This requires a deep understanding of your own thoughts and emotions, as well as being present and aware of what’s around you.

A fantastic way to practice emotional honesty is with meditation. Practicing meditation allows you to focus on the present moment and embrace any feelings that may arise without judgment. You can then take this practice into your daily life. For example, if a negative thought or emotion arises ask yourself “why am I feeling this way?” Allow yourself to embrace this feeling, accept it, and then let it pass.

Improving your self-awareness takes time and patience. Have a conversation with your partner about your desire to become more emotionally honest. Together you can enjoy having real and authentic conversations about your hopes, dreams, mistakes, accomplishments, and fears. Loving all of the good and the bad. That’s what true love is all about.
