  1. Great advice Dustin. That goes along the lines of the saying, “you get better at what you teach” or something like that. You were teaching those couples about what to do in their own lives and it came back as a reminder to you.

Thanks, Rob. I am convinced there is no better way to master something than by teaching it to others. While I’m certainly no master at marriage, this education for myself is one of the reasons I love Engaged Marriage as well.

Sounds like Avery deserves some credit for keeping you guys awake that night. I hope things even out when it comes to the stressors in your life, and even in the hard times, there’s the very old but true adage, “The couple that prays together stays together”. I don’t think we really pray together as often as we should (beyond the casual meal prayer), but it is a form of the 15 minute conversation that can go a long way. I let Jason know I’m praying for him, though, when there is nothing I can do otherwise to alleviate a stress in his life, and he really appreciates that.

Anyway, we’ve got one (or 3 or 6) of those stressful newborn months coming up, so we’re glad to have your sympathy in advance!

Fantastic advice, Wendy! When we get busy, it can also be very easy to push aside our prayer time and faith life to attend to what seem like more urgent responsibilities. Instead, turning *to* God can provide real clarity and strength during those tough times.

Thanks for the personal post! I just signed up for our Engaged Encounter weekend – I’m super excited to hear from more mentor couples like you and Bethany who are “walking the walk” ahead of us!

That’s excellent, Ellen! I’m so excited that you and your fiance are being proactive and taking a weekend retreat. I’ve never been to an Engaged Encounter event, but I am sure it will be an awesome and enriching time.

  4. Some of the best posts are the ones that are super candid. Thanks for that. Thea and I tend to find also that helping other couples is what opens up conversation between us as well. I honestly believe that we have to consistently watch out for our own blindspots and like you said helping others makes that possible.
