Dr. Gary Chapman on Great Sex, Cohabitation, Marriage Preparation and Much More!

Things I Wish I'd Known Before We Got MarriedI recently had the great privilege of interviewing Dr. Gary Chapman and gaining his insight into a variety of important issues impacting dating, engaged and married couples.  As expected, his wisdom was very impressive and exceptionally practical (and you know I like that!).

Most people know Dr. Chapman as the author of more than 30 books on the topics of family and marriage relationships.  His best-known book, The Five Love Languages, tops my list of recommended reading for couples.  If you haven’t read it, you need to.

Dr. Chapman recently published Things I Wish I’d Known Before We Got Married as a down-to-earth advice guide for dating and engaged couples.  Once again, he’s produced a book that will likely top the bestseller list and help many couples.

Here are some examples of the topics covered during our nearly 30-minute conversation:

  • The vital importance of marriage preparation
  • How couples should deal with major personality differences
  • The pros and cons of living together before marriage
  • What to do when you don’t feel “in love” anymore
  • Advice for a satisfying sex life
  • The Apology Love Language
  • How to deal with a Love Language that changes over time or isn’t identifiable

It would mean a lot to me if you shared a link to this post with all of your friends via email, Facebook and Twitter.  I want to be sure everyone has a chance to gain from Dr. Chapman’s wisdom!

  1. Great interview Dustin! We recommend Dr Gary Chapman’s work as well in our Couples Workshops (www.MarriagePrep101.com). In fact, for years we have had a game where couples try to predict each other’s preferred language of love. Guess what? They are usually wrong. Many times we give love the way we want to receive it. Also many people need to take the time to be self aware, and really consider how they want to be loved and communicate their wishes and needs directly to partner. Of course, positive mirroring and appreciation when they get your language of love right goes along way too! Since we have been in the Marriage Prep business for over 10 years, I am definitely interested in Dr Chapman’s newest book. Thanks again for spreading the important messages in a down to earth, humorous and open way.

    • Thanks, Michelle! Yep, my wife and I actually both guessed each other’s Love Language wrong! After we had time to discuss it and think more about it, the assessment made a lot of sense, but our assumptions after many years of marriage were incorrect. The improved knowledge has meant a lot for our relationship. :)

  3. It’s great seeing other professional’s views. And I give you credit for being willing to share the work of others.

  4. This interview looks so interesting! Is there a way I could download it and listen to it on my iPhone? Apple doesn’t support Adobe.

    Thank you!

  5. Julie in Houston says:

Dustin-I just found your blog and have been reading as fast as I can for the past couple days. Thought I’d comment on this little gem. After some communication problems and childish actions on my part and the part of my boyfriend I decided to do some research on relationship resources. For the past few months my bf and I have listened to several audio books about relationships. Dr. Laura Schlesinger and Dr. Gary Chapman have been the best so far. I think that his 5 Love Languages was a complete turning point in our relationship with each other. We are not perfect yet, but have been “filling each others love tanks,” and it’s been so helpful and fun! We also listened to the “Things I Wish I’d Known…” book and it was great as well! I think that any couple even considering marriage must read (or listen) it. Anyway…I’m very happy to have found your blog and look forward to soaking in both old and new content. I’ve even trying to get my BF involved in doing some reading as well-he’s intrigued that you both share the same profession (engineering). Engineers are a different breed and I think he could relate to your style. :) We’re 25/26, have been dating 1.5 years and are trying to figure out young coupledom with the person that we want to be with forever-those things include (fitness, finance, faith, and happiness in our relationship)they are all in the development stage right now :). I think I’ve found the perfect blog to roll those all into one. Thanks again-I just wanted to share a bit about me since I plan on being a regular to the blog. Now, off to listen to your interview with Dr. GC. Julie

    • How cool, Julie! I LOVE hearing from couples who are willing to put forth a little effort to make their most important relationship as fun, fulfilling and intimate as possible. Kudos to you and that engineer boyfriend of yours for investing in each other. :)
