It’s always fun to make your spouse or another couple feel special with a great gift. The problem is it can be tough to find a gift that is both unique and meaningful.
So, I thought it would be fun to assemble a “Top Ten Gifts” list of sorts. Of course, this is an Engaged Marriage list, so the gifts here were chosen because they have the ability to enhance your marriage and family life.
Based on my own thoughts, input from my dear wife, a bit of research on Amazon, and some excellent responses that I received on Facebook and Twitter, I have assembled what I feel is a pretty nice list of ideas.
Rather than be a stand-alone list, I hope these ten ideas get you thinking a bit. I really want to hear from you in the comments section of this post with your own suggestions as well.
10 Awesome Gifts for Married Couples
10. The Love Dare.
This is the book behind the awesome movie Fireproof, which I highly recommend despite Kirk Cameron’s less-than-stellar acting abilities.
If you are not familiar with the concept, the book provides daily activities that you do to show the extent of your love to your spouse. As shown in the movie, this book grew out of the recovery of a marriage in serious trouble, but its lessons can help any of us who want to take our marriage to the next level.
You may not think that a financial book sounds like the most romantic of gifts. You are right, this one’s not about romance, it’s about getting responsible and doing what’s right so your family can enjoy financial freedom, build wealth and increase your ability to give.
Give yourself the gift of reduced stress and a plan for your financial future. Simply put, this book by Dave Ramsey is awesome.
8. No More Mondays.
Here’s another book that you may not expect to see on this list. However, I can personally attest to the impact this book had on my life, and I’ve written about how it helped to inspire me to create Engaged Marriage.
Dan Miller’s No More Mondays is much more than a career guide, it’s a source of great motivation and inspiration that will allow you to approach life in a whole new way. And that rocks.
When you think of an awesome gift, budgeting software may not immediately come to mind. However, I can tell you from very personal experience that building a budget and communicating about money is one of the best things that a couple can do for their marriage.
And You Need A Budget (YNAB) is the best software I’ve found for bringing this valuable tool to your family with as little pain as possible…you might even think it’s fun!
This is a classic book wherein Dr. Gary Chapman unpacks that five different languages that we speak in our marriages. There may be no better resource for improving communication, and we know how important that is to achieving an extraordinary marriage.
Also, don’t miss my exclusive interview with Dr. Chapman where we talk about The Five Love Languages and his new book Things I Wish I’d Known Before We Got Married, which would make a great gift for those dating and engaged couples on your list.
If you are curious about Natural Family Planning (or Christian sexuality in general), skeptical of it or already practice it, this definitive guide by Christopher West is an absolute must-read. The book is written in a question-and-answer format that takes on all of the toughest frequently asked questions about NFP. Christopher West is a candid-speaking expert on the topic of NFP as well as the teachings of the Catholic Church as they pertain to sexuality.
You will enjoy this book, and it will challenge you to consider your sex life in a whole new (and awesome) light.
Here’s another oddball pick (I’m good at that). This product made the list because it can be so helpful in the understanding of a couple’s fertility. Whether you desire to have children or you are looking for some additional assurances in your practice of Natural Family Planning, you should check out this monitor, which identifies the days of peak fertility during each cycle.
We bought one ourselves, and you can check out my Clearblue Easy review for more information on our experiences. It’s a bit pricey, so perhaps designating it as your combined gift to each other is a good option.
This resource, which I’ve developed alongside super-fit marriage guru Tony DiLorenzo, will help you improve your physical fitness and enhance your family life at the same time. This 12-week, video-based exercise program was designed specifically for busy couples who want to get fit and build a thriving relationship in the process.
With over 20 workouts that are all home-based and less than 30 minutes, you’ll finally be able to look and feel awesome while maintaining your busy life. This program has both an all-digital and a DVD option so it also makes a great gift for a friend.
If you are looking to lose weight, regain your energy and add some sizzle to your relationship, go check out Thrive90 Fitness and sign-up to try it risk-free.
2. Kindle Fire HD.
If my wife’s reading this, here’s a hint!
Honestly, there is no better way to expand your mind than reading, and a well-read spouse is a better spouse in my opinion. The Kindle Fire HD opens up the world of books both through Amazon and your local library (check out those great books found in this post to get started), plus it plays HD movies and lets you surf the web all from the same device.
This book was written by me for the Engaged Marriage community of busy married couples. The 15 Minute Marriage Makeover is designed to help you Refresh Your Relationship, Add Sizzle to Your Sex Life and Be Happier Together in Just Minutes per Day.
This is a guide designed for couples to work through together in less than 15 minutes each day. Over the course of several weeks, the lessons and practical exercises shared will lead to better sex and deeper intimacy, communication that counts, real romance for real busy couples, and new-found control over money for any couple.
Check it out today and see what 15 minutes can do for your marriage! It’s available in paperback, Kindle, i-Book, Nook and PDF formats to suit your needs.
***BONUS GIFT: An overnight stay for the two of you or a Marriage Retreat.***
I love this. This out-of-the-box idea came to me through Twitter, and it was my favorite. In the hustle and bustle of the season, it’s easy to get wrapped up in consumerism and focusing on gifts.
While great gifts can be an asset to marriage (as I hope I’ve demonstrated above), why not surprise your spouse with plans to get away from the responsibilities of home for an evening away? For a deeper experience, I’d highly recommend you try a marriage retreat.
